DOLL PARTS - HOLE
PERFECT SHIRT - FOX ACADEMY
I NEED U - BTS
Performance videos rely heavily on shots of the band or artist singing, lipsyncing or dancing to a track but can be cut with shots of other things. They are most commonly used by bands and artists in the alternative or rock genre as it gives them the image of being organic and musically talented. The example I have chosen is Doll Parts by Hole which includes both shots of the band performing and shot of the little girl with the doll.
A narritive music video doesn't usually have any shots of the band or artist performing it instead has a fabricated storyline and characters and plot to follow. Sometimes the story illustrates the lyrics other times it doesnt, the narritive can be about anything. The example I have chosen is I Need U by 방탄소년단//BTS. It tells the story of seven friends who lead troubled lives but find escape and joy in being with each other. It carries messages of youth and hope in darkness.
A conceptual music video doesnt have to have shots of the artist performing or follow a narritve. Conceptual videos are often abstarct and make little or no sense but sometimes allude to a deeper meaning. The example I chose is Perfect TShirt by Fox Academy as the video contains random cut together footage of the two members of the band and other abstarct images that do not appear to relate to the song. This type of video is common for indie and alternative artists.
HYBRID MUSIC VIDEOS
CONCEPTUAL//PERFORMANCE
KILL V. MAIM - GRIMES
It is common to see these three catagories mixed together to create hybrids that utilise different elements of each type. For example, Kill V. Maim by Grimes uses elements of performance as well as a bizarre concept involving gender fluid vampires and the God Father that could arguably be called narritive. Grimes often mixes these types of music video to create bizarre and outlandish illustrations for her music.
