WHAT IS

GENRE?

INDIE - SUB GENRES, CONVENTIONS AND IDEALS

The term Indie refers to music that isnt considered mainstream and is derived from the practice of self realeased music that is 'independant' of large record lables or their subsidiaries. Indie music isnt strictly limited to one genre of music, it often overlaps into subgenres of various kinds however it all follows similar conventions despite trying to portray the image of individuality.

MODERN BASEBALL//RUN FOR COVER RECORDS

Despite no longer being necessarily about independantly produced music bands and artists in the indie genre are often formed with no professional input and guidance and usually start out when the members are young and play shows in basements. A good example of this work ethic is Modern Baseball who were formed when Brendan and Jake met in highschool and recorded their first full length album Sports in their school's music department. Indie bands are known for their portrayal as organic and real. However much like all things they are an amalgamation of influences and aesthetics picked up from similar artists.

It is clear even though music in the indie genre may not sound alike the image of the artists is often alike. Unlike pop music and more commercial artists indie artists dont have to be conventionally attractive or wear expensive branded clothes - in fact the opposite in terms of clothes is considered fashionable and thrift shops are popular among artists and fans. Layered clothes and flannel shirts are popular as well as tattoos and piercings in some cases. It gived the artist an image that is easy to relate to and replicate for fans which builds a connection between the music, the artist and the fans.

In indie music the relationship and emotions between the fans and the music is really important. Indie bands and artists often write songs about real life and issues that fansd can relate to and make a connection with.
